ASSIGNMENT 2: UNIVERSITY LIVING ROOM

Assignment 2: University Living Room

2A: Site

The site is more than merely a physical or formal construct, it is inherently bound up with the forces that shape it: tectonic forces, climatic, cultural, economic and many more. Site is ultimately as much intellectual as it is purely physical since these things prove to be inseparable. It is the designer’s job to recognize the dynamic and multiple “sites” at hand for any given project and to define the limits of site for a designed response. By observing and documenting the physical, environmental and social conditions of our site and their relationships – we will be able to decipher and operate on the sources and qualities of the existing built space. Site can be slippery and fleeting, reliant on context in time as well as place, within a social situation, or a dynamic environmental condition. For this project we will undertake a 24 hour digital scan – in both senses – working with our hands – and with digital media – to overlay many types of site information to inform our design process.

You will be working in teams of two for this project. Visit the site 6 different times of day in a 24 hour period in order to collect planimetric and sectional data relating to the following conditions:

  1. airspace
  2. programmatic

Airspace means things like microclimates, wind conditions, sound, light and shadow traces, view relationships, signs of broadcast and transmission and so on. Programmatic readout means documenting all circulation areas and activities that are happening on the site.

Record through photography, writing and / or drawing:

Each team should document all circulation and programmatic occurrences on the site during each visit and each team should choose at least 2 other conditions from the airspace category to document. Develop your own method of presenting your recordings.

Each team should also model the site in Modo.

Wed. Sept. 22: Site visit / distribution of as built documents

Mon. Sept. 27: Documentation of site due PIN UP

Wed. Sept. 29: site model due for PIN UP / POST
