from the side view i can get on board with either approach that said, the side view is useful for us as designers to see the entirety of the proposal but one will never experience the space that way. from the front view, i prefer scheme #2 because i think the tall volume behind the check out volume makes a great back drop, it really frames the cashiers volume nicely and I think if i were walking by the store I would see that wall filled with art work and it would be impressive so I would want to go in, whereas in the one with the lower volume, I'm not sure I would have the same response. so maybe the way to guage the two designs is to make renderings that are about the experience of walking by, walking in, walking through to the back and turning around to walk back toward the front... just quick ones like you are doing now. you also need to space the volumes apart more equally, the placement currently seems haphazard, and i can't tell if you did it or not, but the ceiling volumnes should correspond dimensionally with the floor volumes. - make them the same x and z dimensions.
